About the Hong Kong Hall of Commons

Mr. Yau Lit, one of the most renowned 1911 Revolution figures, first established "Zhong He Tang" in between 1896-97, with the aspiration to raise funds and gather general public support for Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s revolutionary activities throughout Japan and Southeast Asia, playing a critical role in overthrowing the feudalistic Qing Dynasty and establishing Modern China.  As time passed by, with the relocation of the Nationalist party to the islands of Taiwan and the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Zhong He Tang gradually bowed out from the political stage.

Today, the old Zhong He Tang is prefixed and given a translated name to be known as the “Hong Kong Hall of Commons”.  At the 110th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution (10 October 2021), the organization was renewed and re-established by the descendants of Mr. Yau Lit, with a refreshed mandate that pursues our forerunner's legacy of rejuvenating the great Chinese race and nation:

  • Strengthening the recognition and pride of the Chinese national identity; promoting a new-age Chinese art and cultural renaissance movement

  • Inherit Chinese culture, lifestyle and the philosophical mindset; cultivate local skills and craftsmanship

  • Facilitating youth’s innovative development; promoting nature conservation

Hills are Evergreen Wide and Afar: The Story of Yau Lit

More information about Zhong He Tang and Mr. Yau Lit can be found in the book "Hills are Evergreen Wide and Afar: The Story of Yau Lit" (in Chinese only).

Book summary: Alongside Dr. Sun Yat-sen as one of the Four Desperados, Yau Lit would have lived a comfortable life coming from a rich family in Shunde, Guangdong.  However, witnessing the corruption of the Qing Government and non-stop harassment from foreign invasion, Yau Lit saw no other options but to step onto the path of revolution and swear not to return home until his aspirations of a new China were completed.  To spread his beliefs and help those in need, Yau Lit devoted all his fortune and energy to drift from places to places, only because of his passion and love for the great Chinese nation and culture.
