The champions have hit form of late after an indifferent start to the season and look increasingly as if they are on the kind of run that saw them conquer all before them last year.

Copenhagen managed to overcome Manchester United in the group stage but City will surely provide a much sterner test.

Manchester City will resume their Champions League title defense as they travel to take on Copenhagen in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie.

Copenhagen have the unenviable task of facing a refreshed and injury-free Manchester City team tonight in the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola has recently welcomed back Erling Haaland, John Stones and Manuel Akanji from spells on the sidelines, all three of whom played in the weekend win over Everton.

Copenhagen edged past Manchester United and Galatasaray in Group A to book a berth in the knockout stages of the Champions League alongside group toppers Bayern Munich. It seemed unlikely when they had managed to garner just one point from their first three group-stage matches.

However, Manchester United's subsequent capitulation and a three-match unbeaten streak helped Copenhagen progress. They beat Galatasaray 1-0 on matchday six of the Champions League in a do-or-die contest thanks to a 58th-minute strike from Lukas Lerager.

Copenhagen are currently third in the Superliga but have lost two of their last four matches in all competitions.

Manchester City are back in cruise mode once again and will be feeling confident as they recommence their title defense in the knockout stages of the Champions League. City have last lost a game on December 7 against Aston Villa and have since gone unbeaten in 13 matches, winning 12 of them.

The Cityzens were ruthless in the group stage of Europe's elite competition, racking up all 18 available points as they breezed past the likes of RB Leipzig, Young Boys and Red Star Belgrade.

With Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne back and wreaking havoc, City are undoubtedly the team to beat in the Champions League once again.

Copenhagen vs Manchester City Prediction

A fully-fit Manchester City is bad news for any side. Copenhagen will be without Lerager, who picked up a red card in their final group-stage game against Galatasaray. While the atmosphere at the Parken could intimidate City, Pep Guardiola's men are unlikely to be second-best on the pitch.

Manchester City continue their quest for a second consecutive title when they visit FC Copenhagen for the first leg of their Round of 16 tie in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. After finishing as runner-up in 2021, Manchester City defeated Inter Milan 1-0 last year for their first Champions League crown. FC Copenhagen have reached the Round of 16 for just the second time in their history and the first since 2010-11.

Kickoff at Parken Stadium is set for 3 p.m. ET. The Citizens are -425 favorites (risk $425 to win $100) in the latest Manchester City vs. Copenhagen odds, while the Lions are +1000 underdogs. Why you should back Manchester City

The Citizens were perfect during the group stage as they won all six of their matches, scoring three goals each time out. Erling Haaland shares the Champions League lead with five goals. He enters Tuesday with a three-game scoring streak in the UCL as he recorded back-to-back braces in triumphs over Young Boys before converting in a 3-2 victory against RB Leipzig. The 23-year-old Norwegian striker is first in goals in the English Premier League with 16 after registering a brace in Man City's 2-0 win against Everton on Saturday.

Right behind Haaland in Champions League scoring is Julian Alvarez, who is tied for fifth with four goals. The 24-year-old Argentinian got Man City going in the group stage with a brace in their 3-1 victory against Red Star Belgrade and converted in both of the team's triumphs over RB Leipzig. Midfielder Phil Foden has been a solid contributor for the Citizens as well, scoring three goals in the UCL and posting a hat trick in an EPL victory versus Brentford on Feb. 5. Why you should back FC Copenhagen

The Lions got off to a rough start in the group stage, squandering a two-goal lead and settling for a 2-2 draw with Galatasaray before suffering back-to-back losses against Bayern Munich and Manchester United. However, they bounced back to record two wins and a draw over their final three matches to seize second place in their group. One of the victories was a 4-3 triumph over Man United in which they trailed 2-0 and 3-1.

Copenhagen will be without top scorer Lukas Lerager, who has scored three goals during Champions League play but will sit out Tuesday's match due to suspension. That means players such as wingers Diogo Goncalves and Mohamed Elyounoussi will be relied on to contribute offensively. Both players have converted twice in the UCL while Swedish midfielder Roony Bardghji, who is the Lions' top scorer in the Danish Superliga with seven goals, netted the winning goal against Manchester United in the 87th minute. Now, healthy, in form, and in control of the Premier League title race, Manchester City turn their attention back to the Champions League as they begin the Round of 16 with a first-leg road trip to Danish side FC Copenhagen.

With a fully fit squad and a fearsome winning streak at his back, Pep Guardiola has awakened Man City for their seemingly annual second-half charge, making a habit of turning on the afterburners at just the right time each season.

City have last failed to win back on December 16, a full 10 matches ago across all competitions, while their last defeat came a further two weeks prior. They hold control of their own destiny for the Premier League crown, two points back of leaders Liverpool but with a game in hand, and are hoping to be the only team besides Real Madrid to repeat as Champions League winners since 1990.

Copenhagen were the beneficiaries of a shocking Group A final standing, finishing second with eight points at the expense of Galatasaray and Manchester United dumped out of the competition. The Danish champions are, unfortunately, well-versed in Man City's strength, having met in the UCL group stage in last year's competition.

Man City vs Copenhagen prediction, odds

Moneyline lean: Man City (-380)

Score prediction: Man City 2-0 Copenhagen

Manchester City have been known to put forth attacking duds on the road in European play, and while that could be the case here, it won't stop them from securing a commanding lead in the tie before heading home.

During their Champions League title run last season, Man City won just one of their six road legs, drawing all five others by a 0-0 or 1-1 scoreline. Their only victory came in the first away match in group stage play with a 4-0 victory at Sevilla, but they failed to win at Borussia Dortmund, Copenhagen, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, or Real Madrid. The season before, City were beaten in three European road trips at RB Leipzig, PSG, and Real Madrid, the latter serving as the semifinal deathblow.

They won't be held in Denmark a second time running, but it won't be the attacking onslaught some expect while looking at this match in a vacuum.

Man City vs Copenhagen: best bet

Pick: Highest scoring half — 2H

Odds: +100 (DraftKings)

Just like their season-long narrative, Man City have made a habit of treading water through the first half and opening up the floodgates after the hour mark.

Of Man City's last 22 goals across all competitions since returning from the Club World Cup in late December, only four of them have come in the first half, with one of those being in first-half stoppage time.

They've been notoriously tame on the road in European play over the last few years, even playing to a 0-0 draw at this very venue last season in group-stage play. While a repeat of that result is unlikely, they will be sure to approach this one with their same methodical style through the first 45 minutes before opening it up as their opponent wears down.

Man City vs Copenhagen prop bet

Pick: FC Copenhagen over 2.5 yellow cards

Odds: +125 (DraftKings)

With Man City potentially struggling to score goals through the first half and FC Copenhagen growing in confidence as the match wears on, the hosts could begin to show a bit of recklessness as they put everything on the line to get a shock home result.

Everything tracks for this match to feature a litany of bookings for the Danish club. They already average two yellow cards per match in Champions League play, and 1.9 per match in Danish league play despite sitting firmly in the thick of the title race.

Man City, meanwhile, are second in the Premier League drawing yellow cards with 66 shown to their opponents this season. In the 0-0 draw in Copenhagen between these two clubs last season, Man City played the final hour a man down, and still Copenhagen committed 13 fouls and picked up a pair of bookings despite their advantage.

Finally, the Spanish official Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez is averaging 5.58 yellows per La Liga match this season, and maintaining that record in European play as well. In his four European matches officiated this year (three in the Champions League and one in the Europa League), he's let 23 cards fly.

The UEFA Champions League is back after two months, with the knockout phase getting underway this week. Tuesday will bring us two fixtures, one of which will have FC Copenhagen hosting Manchester City at Parken.

FC Copenhagen sent shockwaves across Europe when they finished second in a group including Bayern Munich, Manchester United, and Galatasaray. But with the Red Devils finished fourth in Group A, the Matchday 6 clash between them and Galatasaray was a straight shootout for the second spot. Meanwhile, Jacob Neestrup’s men are third in the Danish Superliga.

As for Manchester City, the Citizens are among the most in-form teams in the world. They have won their last ten matches, with the run including the triumphant Club World Cup campaign. Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s men topped Group G, winning all six games to ease through to the Round of 16.

The most recent match-up feature FC Copenhagen and Manchester City ended in a goalless draw in the 2022/23 group stage. The Hard Tackle takes a closer look at the encounter ahead of the latest meeting between the two sides.

Team News & Tactics

FC Copenhagen

Jacob Neestrup has a new roster issue hampering his preparations ahead of his side’s latest fixture. Against Manchester City on Tuesday, the FC Copenhagen manager will be bereft of the services of four first-team players.

Lukas Lerager is the latest absentee, with the Danish midfielder seeing red on Matchday Six versus Galatasaray. Interestingly, the 30-year-old scored the goal that sent FC Copenhagen to the Round of 16. Lerager has joined Davit Khocholava (knee) and Theo Sander (knee) on the sidelines, while Birger Meling is doubtful due to a muscle injury.

Kamil Grabara will take his spot between the sticks, with FC Copenhagen lining up in a 4-3-3 formation in front of him against Manchester City. The backline should feature Peter Ankersen, Elias Jelert, Kevin Diks, and Denis Vavro. The quartet will look to remain compact and cut off the passing lanes.

As for the midfield unit, there is no looking past Rasmus Falk, Viktor Claesson, and Diogo Goncalves, with Claesson replacing the suspended Lerager. Finally, the in-demand Roony Bardghji will likely spearhead the line for FC Copenhagen, with Elias Achouri and Mohamed Elyounoussi being the two wide attackers.

Manchester City

Unlike his counterpart in the FC Copenhagen dugout, Pep Guardiola does not have any issues to deal with ahead of the trip to Parken. The Manchester City manager will have a fully-fit squad at his disposal on Tuesday.

Manchester City will also line up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Ederson Moraes being the automatic pick between the sticks. Meanwhile, Guardiola has a plethora of options for the backline, especially for the central defensive partnership.

Kyle Walker and Josko Gvardiol should be the two full-backs, with Ruben Dias and John Stones being the two centre-backs. Stones often gets the nod in the UEFA Champions League and should start ahead of Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji.

As for the midfield unit, Rodri will reprise his usual holding midfield role, with Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne pulling the strings from the middle of the park. Finally, Erling Haaland should spearhead the Manchester City attack against FC Copenhagen, with Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku completing the numbers in the offensive department.

Manchester City might be on a superb winning run. But with the business end of the 2023/24 season approaching, Pep Guardiola needs his main guys to get back to their best to help take his team’s performances to the next level. That brings Kevin De Bruyne into the picture.

The Belgian international returned from a long injury layoff last month and has been excellent in every outing. But Guardiola has yet to hand him a string of starts and is taking his fitness situation seriously. So, with De Bruyne likely to feature from the get-go on Tuesday, except a creative masterclass from the veteran playmaker.

Prediction

FC Copenhagen 1-3 Manchester City

As iterated earlier, Manchester City’s away record against Danish opponents in the main draw of a UEFA competition is dreadful. But they are in an exceptional run right now, and FC Copenhagen will unlikely end their ten-match winning streak.

Meanwhile, Danish sides are yet to score in a home game against reigning European champions. But that unenviable run should end on Tuesday, with Jacob Neestrup’s men producing a typically spirited performance. But that might only get a consolation goal, with The Hard Tackle predicting Pep Guardiola and his charges to clinch a 3-1 victory this midweek.

Copenhagen have not played a competitive fixture since defeating Galatasaray in their final Champions League group game two months ago. The Danish top flight does not resume until next weekend but Copenhagen have tried to limit the rust with a series of friendlies in the new year.

City, by comparison, have been crowned world champions and clicked into ominous form since the club's last European fixture. Pep Guardiola's side bounce into the Danish capital on the back of a ten-match winning streak.
