Ever wanted to see Willem Dafoe as a mad scientist with godlike abilities? Well, your wishes have been granted. The much-anticipated new film from Yorgos Lanthimos, Poor Things, remixes the Frankenstein tale into a young woman's journey of self-discovery. The film is complete with a strange, melodic soundtrack, a journey around the world, and sumptuous period costume. What else could you want from a Lanthimos movie?
If you want to know a little bit more about Poor Things—it's a trip!—the film is based on Alasdair Gray's novel of the same name. The film follows Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a resurrected woman/scientific experiment created by Godwin Baxter (Dafoe) in an attempt to test the boundaries of science and medicine. Bella has the brain of a child—and Godwin slowly becomes attached to her as a paternal figure. As Bella matures, she becomes fiercely independent and demands to see the world on her own terms, carving out a life that is full of rich and wild experiences.

Trust us: You don't want to miss Poor Things, while you can still catch it in theaters. The film saw a limited release on December 8, followed by a wide release on December 22. There's no better way to take in the hilarious performances of its star-studded cast, which also includes Mark Ruffalo and Ramy Youssef. That said, if you're a homebody and would rather throw your own watch party for Poor Things, you'll have to patiently wait—because there's no streaming release date yet. That said, we're willing to bet that Poor Things will be available to rent or buy on Prime Video and Apple TV in early 2024. Since the film was distributed by Searchlight Pictures, which is owned by Walt Disney Studios, Poor Things will stream on Hulu sometime after that.
Either way, we're willing to bet that Poor Things won't disappoint you—any film that features Dafoe belching at a dinner table for laughs (don't ask!) has our vote of approval.
