The 2023-24 Rivalry Series resumes this week after a two-month hiatus, with the women’s national teams from the United States and Canada set to battle three times over the next five days. The U.S. won the first two matchups of this year’s event in early November. The two sides then split the ensuing two meetings in mid-December. These three contests will conclude the seven-game series.

After a couple months break to begin the inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League season, the best in the world get set to represent their countries, with the second Rivalry Series window opening up in Saskatoon.

This season’s series began very similar to the 2022-23 edition. The U.S. won the first three games, to some dispute, while Canada hung on to win the final four games of the series.

Once again, the Americans jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Canadians have managed to stay alive with a shootout win in mid-December, making things interesting heading into the final three games of the series.

Team USA has won the Rivalry Series just once in the first three editions of the series, that coming when it was a best-of-five during the 2019-20 campaign.

The Americans are bringing a lot of the usual suspects back, including PWHL Boston captain Hilary Knight, who leads the series with six points so far. New York forward Alex Carpenter has scored three goals thus far, more than any other player.

The biggest thing the U.S. has done through the series’ first four games is hold down Captain Canada, Marie-Philip Poulin. The Olympic hero has been held off the scoresheet in each of the first four games, but she has picked up some confidence with PWHL Montreal, and hopes to carry that momentum into the Rivalry Series.

This will be the 178th meeting between Canada and the United States in women’s hockey. Canada is 99-77-1 against the U.S., although the Americans have won four of the last five matchups, including in the Gold Medal Game at last year’s World Championships.
